Every time a speaker stands before an audience...

Determining Your Presentation Topic: Every Talk’s Starting Point

Embark on your journey with us to better public speaking and presentations. In this series, Cliff Kennedy breaks down the public speaking process he coaches to speakers of all levels. Already have a topic? Continue to Step 2: Defining Your Purpose.

Determining the right presentation topic is the crucial first step toward delivering a compelling and impactful speech. A well-defined topic not only provides clarity but also sets the stage for engaging your audience effectively. This article delves into the essential elements of choosing a presentation topic that resonates and inspires.

The Significance of a Powerful Idea

As Victor Hugo once said:

“All the armies in the world are powerless against an idea whose time has come.”

This emphasizes that the strength of your presentation lies in the power of your idea. A timely and relevant topic can spark change, inspire action, and leave a lasting impression—even within the confines of a presentation, speech, or talk.

Five Core Properties of a Successful Presentation Topic

In analyzing effective speakers and presentations, five core properties emerge as foundational to a successful presentation topic:

1. Purpose

Purpose is the driving force behind your presentation. It answers the fundamental questions:

  • Why are you speaking?
  • What value are you providing to your audience?
  • Why should they listen?

Having a clear purpose ensures that your presentation is focused and meaningful. It guides the content and delivery, making your message more impactful.

2. Authenticity

Authenticity stems from sharing your true self—your values, experiences, and perceptions. It’s about:

  • Why you are uniquely qualified to speak on this topic.
  • Establishing credibility through genuine connection.
  • Demonstrating passion for your subject matter?

3. Relevance

A topic must be relevant to your audience and the current context:

  • Timeliness: Is the topic applicable to today’s world?
  • Audience Connection: Does it address the interests or needs of your specific audience?

Relevance ensures that your audience finds value in your presentation, increasing engagement and the likelihood that your message will be well-received.

4. Vision

Vision provides your audience with something to aspire to—a glimpse into a better future or a new possibility:

  • Inspiration: Offering ideas that motivate and encourage action.
  • Unity: Creating a shared goal or understanding among your audience.

A strong vision can unite your audience and give them a sense of purpose aligned with your message.

5. Novelty

Novelty introduces something new or unique:

  • Original Perspectives: Presenting ideas in a way that hasn’t been considered before.
  • Innovation: Offering fresh solutions or approaches.

Novelty captures attention and sparks curiosity, making your presentation more memorable. It can make your audience think, “Wow! I never thought about it that way!”

Balancing All 5 Properties for Your Topic

It’s important to note that not all five properties need to be equally emphasized in your presentation topic. Depending on your subject and audience, certain properties may take precedence. For instance, a technical presentation might prioritize purpose and relevance, while a keynote address might focus on vision and authenticity.

To develop a topic that embodies these properties:

  1. Reflect on Your Purpose: Clarify why you want to speak on this topic and what you hope to achieve.
  2. Embrace Authenticity: Consider your unique experiences and insights that lend credibility.
  3. Ensure Relevance: Research your audience to tailor your topic to their interests and needs.
  4. Articulate Your Vision: Define the future state or change you wish to inspire.
  5. Introduce Novelty: Think about how you can present your ideas in an original and engaging way.

Practical Tips to Define Your Topic

To develop a topic that embodies these properties:

  • Brainstorm Ideas: Jot down all potential topics that interest you.
  • Evaluate Against the Five Properties: Assess each idea based on purpose, authenticity, relevance, vision, and novelty.
  • Choose the Strongest Topic: Select the one that best aligns with your goals and resonates with the properties.
  • Refine Your Focus: Narrow down the topic to a specific angle or question to ensure clarity.

Summary: Your Topic is the Foundation

Choosing the right presentation topic is foundational to the success of your speech. By considering the five core properties—purpose, authenticity, relevance, vision, and novelty—you can craft a topic that not only engages your audience but also delivers a powerful and lasting impact.

Remember, the world awaits your idea. With a well-chosen topic, you have the potential to inspire change and leave a meaningful impression on your audience.
